How to use the o-map

  • Zoom in to 1:15 000 or closer to see the orienteering map. Above that, an overview map is shown. Zooming snaps to the design scales 1:15 000, 1:10 000, 1:5 000, 1:4 000 and 1:1 000; each has its own symbol set.
  • New areas are loaded automatically. The first visit of an area takes a few seconds ("Loading map data"); afterwards it is instant for everyone.
  • Search places, streets and countries in the search field at the top.
  • The buttons on the left show or hide contours and hillshading and measure distances (click points on the map, click the ruler again to finish).
  • Right-click an object to see what it is, when it was last changed and its full change history.
  • 3D View (cube on the left or in the information panel) drapes the map over the terrain from the elevation model, with relief shading. Set the height exaggeration, tilt and direction in the 3D panel; you can also turn and tilt with the right mouse button, with Ctrl or with two fingers.

Export

Click Export in the information panel. Choose PNG or PDF, the paper size (A4 or custom, in mm or inch), the scale and the position. On the export area map, search for a place or zoom out to find your area, then move the map until the red frame covers what you want to print; "Fit frame" zooms back to it. Maps are rendered at 300 dpi and printed at the true scale. The PDF "Standard" style adds a header with scale, equidistance and date, a north arrow and a QR code; "Blank" contains only the map. North lines are printed every 33.33 mm.

Please always attribute the map: © o-map, © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Vector base map for map makers: choose "OCAD (.ocd)", "OpenOrienteering Mapper" or "DXF" as the format. You get the objects of the area as vector data (georeferenced in UTM, with ISOM numbers) and optionally contours from the elevation model (2.5, 5 or 10 m). In Mapper, "Symbols → Replace symbol set → ISOM 2017-2" gives you the official symbols; in OCAD, load the official symbol set over the map (Symbol → Load Symbols From). The symbol set is chosen automatically: ISSprOM 2019 (sprint) up to 1:5000, ISOM 2017-2 (forest) above; you can also pick it yourself. The contours are a starting point and do not replace LiDAR data.

O-Editor

Register for free and open the O-Editor from the dashboard or the map.

  1. Choose a symbol in the palette on the left and draw it on the map (points: one click; lines and areas: click the vertices, double-click to finish). Tick "Add several identical objects" to draw more than one.
  2. Click an existing object to edit it: drag vertices to reshape, click a midpoint to add a vertex, or delete it. Choosing another symbol while an object is selected changes its symbol.
  3. Use a satellite or street map as background and lower the o-map opacity to trace objects.
  4. Save changes. Your edits appear on the map for everyone and on the heatmap.

O-Analyser

Upload the GPX file of a training or competition (and optionally a photo of the map) under Dashboard → O-Analyser. Activities can be public or private; public ones appear on your shareable list. The personal heatmap shows all your activities at a glance.

O-Manager

Under Dashboard → O-Manager you set the courses of a training or competition online, also as a team and on your phone:

  • Map sheet: choose scale, paper size and area (red frame). When you create an event this has its own tab; later the settings are under "Print & export".
  • Your own OCAD map: under "Map sheet" you upload an OCD file (OCAD 10 and newer) as the background; the courses are then printed on it. Georeferenced maps (e.g. Swiss LV95 or UTM) are placed automatically, others you move and turn by hand. Old courses in the file (course setting symbols 701–707) are hidden; you can hide the o-map around it.
  • Controls: place pre-start, start, controls and finish on the map (from the pre-start, where the time starts, a marked route leads to the start triangle; the description sheet shows its length); drag to move them. Codes start at 31.
  • Courses: select a course and tap controls on the map; the length (straight line via the controls) and the climb (from the elevation model along the legs, to the nearest 5 m) are calculated, and you can enter both yourself. The overprint is shown at print size following ISOM. If a course visits a control more than once, its numbers are shown together ("3/7"). Drag control numbers on the map to a better place (per course). Choose the route from the last control to the finish per course (taped, navigate to the funnel, no tapes); taped routes are drawn dashed, and with "Edit route on the map" you add, move and delete bend points.
  • Categories: assign categories to courses, with the number of runners for printing.
  • Control descriptions: IOF symbols for columns C–H of each control.
  • Print & export: course maps as PDF (with control descriptions and, if you like, a north arrow), separate description sheets and IOF XML 3.0 for OE, MeOS or SportIdent.
  • Team: invite others by username or email ("can edit" or "view only"). Everyone works live at the same time: changes save themselves and show up for the others a moment later; the top right shows who is in the event, and the map shows the others' mouse pointers. In the overview you can archive, restore and delete events, or leave one as a member. If two people edit the same item, the last change wins.

Route choice of the day

Every day Route choice has a new leg from somewhere in the world. After you press "Start" the routes appear and you have 20 seconds to pick the fastest, or you choose your own route and then draw it without time pressure. Then you see how the others chose, how long they took and which own routes they drew. You can play without an account; with one, your streak and statistics are kept. Legs are generated automatically and checked before they go live.
